Lenovo is gradually making its mark among the giants of the laptop manufacturing industry as well as the tablet and phone industry. With great hardware that comes at an affordable price Lenovo is making it very clear on its competitors that the company is here to stay. Lenovo made the world see its aesthetic outreach with the Yoga Pro whose sleek design and slim dimensions earnt admiration and awe from users and critics alike.

This time, however, Lenovo decided to take it a level further on the performance and price while keeping the design humble. This in no way means to imply that the latest Lenovo Yoga 3 14 is by any means features a petty design. With overall impressive performance, battery stats and hardware, the Yoga 3 14 has done justice to the Yoga Pro as its successor.

Lenovo Yoga 3 14 vs Lenovo Yoga Pro

The Lenovo Yoga 3 14 is a substantial step forward from its predecessor, the Lenovo Yoga Pro in terms of processing. Therefore, what it might lack in the looks (for some), it makes up with the great system performance and its reasonable pricing with a lot of configurations available.

It is one of the best hybrids around and is great for everyday indoor use. Lenovo Yoga 3 14 certainly makes the experience of working on it enjoyable for any user. Its full HD display with a 10-point touch and a 14-inch screen make movie watching or playing power point presentations on the laptop with perfect graphics possible making the experience pleasant.

It’s more than a Laptop!

Lenovo Yoga 3 14 is not just a simple laptop; the screen can be rotated at an angle of 3600 making it a tablet! This flexibility in screen rotation is owing to the use of two hinges in the design of Yoga 3 14. This means that you can use the Lenovo 3 14 any way you want or as the official Lenovo website states, the laptop can be used on one of the following four ways “Laptop, Stand, Tent, or Tablet”.

The ability to make a laptop into a tablet offers a whole range of functionalities that a user can perform using the Yoga 3 14. It also reflects the capability of Lenovo as a company to transform ordinary devices that are otherwise meant for a single functionality into a multiple-in-one device.  This also considerably adds to the portability of the Lenovo Yoga 3 14 making it look and feel more like a 14-inch tablet that can be carried around very easily.

The hybrid Lenovo Toga 3 14 is not just a laptop for entertainment purposes, it is equally useful for workplace or study environments owing to its portable design, HD graphics and striking system performance. The look of the laptop is elegant with a ruggedized shell that feels great to touch and look at.

The color options available are black, silver and white. The metal hinges that make the 3600 rotation possible are a great example of Lenovo’s mechanical superiority over other similar hybrids. They are easily operable and do not require much force to make the laptop turn in any direction that you want.

At 13.18″ x 9.03″ x 0.72″, as mentioned earlier, the Yoga 3 14 is not as sleek as the Yoga Pro but it does have a pretty elegant design. It is 18.3mm (0.7 inch) wide and weighs 1.7kg (3.7 pounds) which when compared to Yoga Pro (which was about 13mm thick and weighed 2.6-pound (1.18kg)) is a tad bit more.

This, however, does not adversely affect the portability of the former and therefore, Yoga 3 14 is still failry very sleek and light weight when compared to other similar models in the market. This model of the Lenovo Yoga series flaunts a 14 inch screen which also benefits the 3 14 as the slightly bigger screen size makes the use of Lenovo Yoga 3 14 as a tablet easier and enjoyable.

The slightly larger screen size leaves the user with some extra screen space which makes the laptop easier to operate in the tablet mode. The 1920 x 1080 pixel screen resolution along with an IPS panel makes the pictures and text appear sharp and makes off-angle viewing easy.

The hardware that Yoga 3 14 has been built on is definitely upgraded and more capable than its predecessor, the Yoga Pro. The ports and connections however, have been kept the same in both versions. The Lenovo Yoga 3 14 uses its USB 2.0 port as the charging port and can be charged using a special USB cable which comes with the laptop.

The Intel Core M processor has been swapped with a top-notch Intel 5th generation i5 processor which can be upgraded to an i7 by adding a little more money. This considerably improves the performance of the Yoga 3 14 as the Intel Core M was greatly hindering the advanced hardware’s performance in Lenovo Yoga Pro while reducing battery life at the same time.

The 5th generation Intel i5 or i7 processors are a great match for the hardware in Lenovo Yoga 3 14 hence enabling it to perform much faster while supporting the battery life instead of reducing it.   The Lenovo Yoga 3 14 has Bluetooth but no optical disk in any of its configurations. The Lenovo Yoga 3 14 also has a 720p webcam.

Audio and Video

The Lenovo Yoga 3 14 comes with small stereo speakers located at the bottom left and right of the hybrid laptop. They are great for listening music or watching movies in a quite environment. The speakers sound clear and crisp, ensuring that the user enjoys his listening experience.

The 14 inch screen and the high screen resolution, 1920 x 1080, make it possible for the viewer to watch videos and movies with excellent viewing quality. The video output has been kept the same as that of Lenovo Yoga Pro. The Micro-HDMI video output requires either a male Micro-to-full-size HDMI cable or a dongle with a male Micro-HDMI and female full-size HDMI.

Battery and Performance

The battery life of Lenovo Yoga 3 14 is estimated to be 8 hours which is enough to get anyone through a regular day at the workplace or university. With regular browsing and video streaming, the battery performance is great and also does not deteriorate while running apps and games which is a big plus.

The battery life despite being great when compared to that of the competitors like Dell XPS 13 is lesser but the performance caters for that little short coming. The performance tests on Lenovo Yoga 3 14 suggest that the laptop cum tablet essentially has the same system performance if not greater than that of Dell XPS 13 and other similar laptops from different manufacturers. Keep the screen brightness to a minimum and the keyboard backlight off and the battery does great for everyday use.

The price is a deciding factor when it comes to buying laptops. Many devices capable of great things have failed to make their mark only due to high pricing while many average ones have done well only because they were affordable. The Lenovo Yoga 3 14 is not an average device but is also not ridiculously expensive.

The laptop starts at a mere $799.00 for a device with 5th generation Intel i5 processor, 4 GB RAM and 128GB SSD M.2. The memory can be doubled to an 8 GB RAM and a 257 SSD for $919.00. The Pricing in UK starts from £650 while in Australia, it starts at AU$1,299. The i7 version of the Lenovo Yoga 3 14 is currently available only in the US and Australia but not in UK.

The Shortcomings

As with every great device, Lenovo Yoga 3 14 does have its fair share of shortcomings but these are insignificant when compared to all the other features that this laptop has to offer. The screen brightness cannot get high beyond a certain point and well, that point is far below that of the normal laptops.

Also, the screen cannot handle glare well so the outside use of Lenovo 3 14 can be a bit of an unpleasant experience. The speakers although good in audio quality are inefficient when used in an environment with noise and for activities like movie night, some external help might be required.

The keyboard is small and compact which is great but will need users with previous experience of large keyboards to get a little practice of using it. The keyboard is backlit but there are only two settings for the back light; on or off. The touchpad is missing physical touch buttons so the sensors will need a little calibration before you actually start working.

The charging cable is just 6 feet long so some users might need an extension or a similar fix to work with the laptop while it is charging. Some users might find the Lenovo 3 14 a bit bulky to use in the tablet mode owing to its weight and well, it is true that the Yoga 3 14 is heavier than Lenovo Yoga Pro and some other similar hybrid laptops.

As is already evident, these are all minor hiccups that one can expect to find in any laptop. The Lenovo Yoga 3 14 is also one such similar example. The minor hiccups although present are not deal breakers, therefore, users can certainly be satisfied with the system performance enough to keep them hooked to the device. The outdoor use is problematic but then again, most users do not have to use their laptops outside so as long as the Lenovo 3 14 remains inside the office or the room, it performs pretty well for a hybrid laptop.

The Verdict

No single piece of tech is perfect in today’s fast paced world and the Lenovo Yoga 3 14 is no exception to this. It does have some lacking but the overall system performance is good enough for any user to be able to let the minor hitches go. The addition of 5th generation i5 and i7 processors is a commendable upgrade which has unleashed the true potential of the Lenovo Yoga 3 14.

The pricing is fair and with all kinds of different pocket friendly configurations available, the Lenovo Yoga 3 14 is a nice, elegant budget friendly laptop. It significantly enhances the performance and battery life of the Yoga series hybrid laptops by still remaining relatively inexpensive, hence being one of the best hybrid laptops to buy.

The Lenovo Yoga 13 14 smartly embeds the tablet functionality within the 14-inch laptop with powerful hardware and an impressive system performance. Great for everyday use and flexible enough to be used in a variety of different formations, the Lenovo 13 14 is an innovative piece of hardware.

If you are a great fan of the Lenovo Yoga series and are looking for a laptop to buy at an affordable price, you will want to consider the Lenovo Yoga 3 14 for the cost effectiveness that it has to offer.
