I have owned a couple of routers before as well. It is not a hobby of mine to collect networking devices, although I reckon some people do like to collect and brag about them in after years. The last one on my list was Netgear N600; I bought it for myself but ended up giving it to a friend since it was no longer needed. Right now I am using the Nighthawk X6 AC3200 tri-band router, and well… this beauty works like a charm.

20160225_174520There is so much stuff that I want to share about this wireless router, but I fear that I might end up wandering off to a multitude of different aspects of this device that you may or may not be interested in reading. Anyhow, I have decided to lay it all out about the awesome Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 wireless networking router. This is going to be a detailed review so I suggest that you bookmark this web page for later referencing.

Here are some of the devices that I have simultaneously connected to this wireless tri-band router.

  • Kindle Fire
  • 2 Roku’s
  • 3 Samsung smartphones
  • Main TV in the living room
  • My Playstation 4
  • My desktop PC and a laptop

Now the above devices are just a fraction of what the Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 can handle in terms of connectivity. You can connect tons more, but the important connection is that whether simultaneous or multiple device connection cut down on the overall speed of the router.

Yes, it does. However the performance of the router is dependent on the data relay speed. In latter context Netgear’s Nighthawk X6 AC3200 wins. It keeps up with the transmission speed and that too without having any effect on the coverage area. It is part of the reason as to why I abandoned the N600 Netgear router; it was not giving me enough speed and performance. I admit, my research was flawed, so I wish I didn’t end up with the N600 model instead.

The Nighthawk X6 AC3200 wireless tri-band gigabit router has dual core processor, which basically means that it can maintain a long range connection between the access point and the end point of the signal coverage zone. You will not be losing the connection and will hardly notice massive signal drops moving from one storey to another or from one room to another for that matter.

  • Excellent coverage area. Our house is spread over 3,000 square feet with double storeys. This tri-band wireless router maintains its signal strength in all rooms from both storeys. So far, after several months of rigorous use, I have hardly noticed any signal drop in remote corners, kitchen or bathroom etc.
  • Does not need a lot of restarts. This router hardly goes “dead” or “blank” on me.
  • You can stream full size Blu-ray videos, i.e. if your main device is able to keep up with the router’s data relay speed.
  • Compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 standards to let you transfer data at highest rate possible.
  • The Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 security features come with parental control aspect. The general blocking filters are helpful to those who want to prevent kids from accessing a specific type of online/ offline content.
  • This wireless tri band gigabit router can automatically prioritize applications. This automatic feature is based on frequent app access. For instance, I like to use Netflix and Amazon Videos a lot more than other applications. Therefore, this router dedicates more resources to aforementioned apps for maximum results.

I do, however, wish that Netgear does not mess up the router’s performance in next update rollout. They have the tendency to do that based on my earlier experience and whatever the consumer population is saying already at various online forums.

My experience with unboxing the Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 wireless tri-band router?

This router comes in a big promising box. It is heavy and sealed with transparent plastic covering all over. You will find the following things while unboxing this magnificent beauty:

  • You will find an exceptional quality Ethernet cable *(60 Ft. total length) neatly tucked inside the box. I’d recommend using this cable to connect the router to your primary device. The rest of the devices can be connected via wireless mode.
  • One AC PSU with universal voltage compatibility. This unit also comes with a long power cable so that whether the router is placed on a desk or hung on a wall mount, the AC unit can easily reach across to the power point.
  • One instruction manual to help you get started.
  • Couple of leaflets and brochures advertising other related Netgear products. May or may not be included with your order.

Please note that the Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 box does not come with a setup disk. At least mine didn’t. The point is to install and run setup through the internet. Once connected the popup window in your taskbar will automatically initiate the Netgear router app installation window where latest version can be downloaded easily.

The router has three antennas which you can use to point in a specific direction to boost signal strength. If you are not a power user, then you can simply spread the antennas at even distance to overall maximize signals. The default factory printed SSID username and SSID password for Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 router are printed on the bottom side of the router itself. Write them down or take their photo for later referencing.

The dual band features for this wireless router provide both 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz connectivity bands. Obviously 5 is a bigger number, which means that you can setup the router to dedicate higher band to streaming online video content and to resource hungry applications.

I noted that the 5 Ghz band allowed easy access to fast forwarding, fast reversing and other video feed related functions. That being said if you are not a power user, you can evenly divide the Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 dual bands between various favorite applications to maintain its data transmission speed.

What other things do I need to know about this router?

Overall there is nothing complicated about setting up with router. I find the setup part most important because I still tend to mess up with router configuration setup phase. My brother basically specializes in network engineering, so he goes through the settings again to make sure all of our devices are connecting flawlessly.

By default, the installation process for Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 is super easy. After you have connected the device for the first time to your computer, let the online wizard install the router on its own. In between the setup process it will ask you for SSID, you can input the default SSID and password that are written at the bottom of the router itself. They can be changed later on; don’t worry about it.

I didn’t notice any heating issues with this router. God forbid if it overheats or something fries, I’d have to send it back to Netgear for a repair/replacement. The problem is that if this router stops working, you will obviously need to connect your older router. Eventually your entire home or office network will be affected as well.

Closing thoughts?

In conclusion if you are looking to buy a powerful multifunction router from long term investment point of view, hands down the Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 is the best thing in the market right now. There are some other outstanding routers as well, but since I have not tried them, I cannot comment on their performance.

You will not regret buying this router. It is that good; trust me.
