The tech-savvy Aloft Hotels Chain saw an addition to its employees, who wasn’t someone ordinary, but the company’s first Robotic Butler A.L.O. It is being introduced as a “charismatic Cyber associate”.
Checking into the hotel owned by Starwood hotels and resorts has never been more intriguingly interesting. Want a toothbrush change; A.L.O will be there to assist you, as Savioke, maker of A.L.O, so flamboyantly writes in his blog post “because A.L.O is a service robot designed for the hospitality industry”.
Botlr is 3 feet tall and weighs 100 pounds. It has a carrying capacity of 2 cubic feet, designed to walk at a human pace, moving independently between floors through the elevators. Brian McGuinness, global grand leader of Starwood’s speciality proudly flaunted in one of his statements; “As you can imagine, hiring for this particular position was a challenge as we were seeking a very specific set of automated skills, and one that could work, literally, around the clock. As soon as A.L.O entered the room, we knew it was what we were looking for”
How does it work? On reaching the guests door, it will phone the room, informing of its arrival. As the door opens, the on-board camera comes to use, hence unlocking its lid to provide onscreen instruction, for how to remove the item from the robot and fixing the lid back. After this, the bot returns to its departure point.
A.L.O will be officially hired on the 20th of August at Aloft Cupertino, followed by several new Bots in the coming months. “A.L.O. has the work ethic of Wall-E, the humour of Rosie from The Jetsons, and reminds me of my favourite childhood robot, [Star Wars’] R2-D2,” McGuinness said. “We are excited to have it join our team.”
This might be a step towards the robot revolution. Whether it’s for good, or for the bad, we have yet to see.
